Where we live, wood is everywhere — and above all, it is completely free. The sea washes driftwood onto our beautiful beaches. The island’s olive trees offer their unique wood. The forests of Skiathos fill with fallen plane branches. Kostas Zouchas doesn’t buy expensive raw materials. He takes this free gift of nature and gathers it with respect. Then he uses his imagination, and so gives it an invaluable artistic worth.
From the workshop to the gallery: motorcycle parts that become art
His creativity doesn’t stop at wood. The artist does something even more subversive: he collects old parts from engines and motorcycles. Gears, chains, spark plugs, old metal and screws that were ready for the bin find their own place in the gallery. Kostas Zouchas “marries” them with natural wood and makes very beautiful things. These hard, industrial materials are transformed into sculptures, robots, distinctive lamps and unique works of art that draw the eye.
An inner need that became therapy
How did it all begin? As the artist himself explained to us, his art was born of an intense inner need: “In general, I can’t sit still. I have to be doing something — I can’t stop and sit quietly.” This constant need for movement and creation found an outlet in his hands. For Kostas Zouchas, creating isn’t simply a job or a hobby. It is true therapy and a way out of the stress of everyday life. When the hands work, the mind is calm.
The allure of the challenge
The most fascinating part of his work is the search for the new. The artist avoids the easy and the repetitive. He told us with passion: “Whatever is difficult is wonderful, because the challenge is how to bring it to life. Making something we have made before is very boring. What I like is the new, the unknown.” In this process the wood itself guides him with its grain and its shapes — but it takes his own eye and his devotion to bring that beauty to the surface.
The magic of “rebirth”
The essence of this art lies in a simple thought: you take things from nature or from everyday life and bring them to their best form. Forgotten wood and the old metal of engines are transformed into striking wall clocks, distinctive lamps and handmade sculptures. Each piece becomes useful again, living up to the gallery’s name: a true rebirth.
Creative free time
Getting to know this art shows us something else that matters in our everyday lives. How do we spend our free time? Instead of sitting passively in front of a screen, Skiathos offers us a huge creative outlet. A walk to collect old objects or materials from nature can be the beginning of something beautiful. Free time gains meaning when we get our hands dirty. Creating calms us, expresses us and fills us with pride.
Our message as students
This approach is a great lesson for us young people. We live in an age of overconsumption and hectic rhythms. Kostas Zouchas shows us another way. With ecological awareness and creativity, we can work wonders. Old engine gears and plain wood at the side of the road are not rubbish. They can become our own outlet. They inspire us to see our surroundings with different eyes, not to fear difficulties, and to create beauty out of nothing.
